Tattoo Aftercare Guide

How you look after your new tattoo in the days and weeks after getting it done is very important. Proper aftercare keeps your tattoo clean and makes a big difference in how your tattoo heals and looks long-term. Here’s my straightforward tattoo aftercare guide.

How to heal your tattoo properly

Immediate Aftercare

Once your tattoo is finished, it’ll be wrapped for protection. Leave the wrap on for a few hours. This helps prevent bacteria or dirt from entering the fresh tattoo.
When you remove it, wash the area gently with warm water and fragrance-free soap. Pat dry (don’t rub) with a clean paper towel or air dry.

The First 24 Hours

On the first night, rewrap your tattoo before bed. It may still weep small amounts of ink and plasma, which can stick to your sheets or allow dust and fibres to enter the skin. Wrapping it keeps the area clean and prevents it from drying out too quickly overnight.

In the morning, remove the wrap, wash it gently again, and let it breathe for the rest of the day. Avoid touching it and apply a thin layer of moisturiser (see below) toward the end of the day.

Ongoing Care (Days 2–14)

For the next couple of weeks:

  • Wash your tattoo once or twice daily with mild, unscented soap.

  • Apply a light, breathable moisturiser like Palmer’s Cocoa Butter or Aveeno. Avoid heavy petroleum or wax-based products like Vaseline — they block pores and can cause spots or irritation.

  • Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight and avoid soaking it in water (baths, pools, etc.).

  • Don’t pick or scratch any scabs — let them fall away naturally.

Your tattoo will start to peel and might feel a bit itchy — that’s normal. Just keep it clean and lightly moisturised.

Long-Term Care

Once healed, protect your tattoo with SPF 30+ whenever it’s exposed to the sun. Hydrated skin helps tattoos stay sharp and rich in contrast.
